Michelle Randall - Estate Planning
 Rod McLeod introduced guest speaker Michelle Randall of Henley and Straub, who spoke and answered several questions regarding estate planning options.  She emphasized the need for seniors to have in place representation agreements, advanced directives, enduring power of attorney, and suggested that all members obtain a copy of the booklet “My Voice” from the Vancouver Island Health Authority, which outlines details and forms regarding all the issues.
 
Ms. Randall was thanked by David Broad, and presented with the usual speaker’s gift.

General Meeting

Call to Order:   10:00 a.m. by President Tom Wallace
Introduction of Guests:  Bruce Maybank introduced two guests, Grant Taylor and John Blomfield.
 
Miscellaneous Reports
Bridge Group –   Jim Surgenor advised he is replacing Bob Day, who he thanked for having organized the group for several years.  At present, the group has twelve regular members and five spares.
 
Golf: Golf continues at Ardmore on Fridays at 10:00 am.
 
Hoppy Club: Rod McLeod announced that the next gathering will be at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, October 10th at 3:00 at the Prairie Inn in Saanichton.
 
Membership Roster: Jim Kingham referenced the membership roster booklet for 2018/2019 which is available, and thanked Bruce Maybank for the considerable work he completed for its production. Copies will be available at the November meeting for members wishing to have one.
 
Executive Reports:
 
President: Tom Wallace related that he has been in contact with a BC Probus Director (Mr. Keith McGregor) who states Probus Canada now has a new informative website – probus.org
 
Membership: Steve Heddle, sitting in for Andy Rosequist, Membership chair, advised that 49 members were present at the meeting, as well as two guests.
 
Treasurer: Vic Swan reported that our present bank balance is $2,016.58.
 
Secretary: No report – Rod Fimrite was absent, but Don Amos very capably provided notes for these minutes. Thanks Don!
 
Speakers: Rod McLeod has arranged for the following members to help him obtain speakers for our monthly meetings: Don Lambourne, Kevin Murphy, David Broad, and Steve Heddle.
Our speaker for the November 1 general meeting will be the BC Ferries Communications Manager, In January it will be the Senior’s Programme Manager at Panorama Recreation Centre, and a speaker from the CRD Environmental Department will speak at the February 2019 general meeting.  A possible speaker for March 2019 will speak on the topic of prostate cancer.
Rod asked if any member wishes to volunteer as a “step in speaker” in the event a regular speaker cancels at the last minute to please forward him their name.
 
Events Committee: Mike Parfitt asked for volunteers to help him on the committee.  At present he is working alone with backup from outgoing chairman Noel Currie.
Mike advised he has arranged for an Institute of Ocean Sciences tour for Friday, October 19th at 10:30.  A list of names is required before the event.  Noel Currie will be sending out an e-mail asking for names of those interested.  A maximum of 15 can attend.
Future tours Mike is working on include: a Canadian Navy boat trip and tour; helicopter facility tour; Government House tour; and Nicholson Manufacturing tour.
Mike also mentioned that the SHOAL centre, Beacon Community Services, requires volunteer drivers for medical appointments.
Noel Currie is putting together our December Christmas luncheon, to be held in December at the Army/Navy Vets in Sidney. Details to follow.
 
Remembrance Day: Don Malins reminded the executive to provide a wreath for the November 11th ceremony in Sidney. (Rod Fimrite has the wreath, and will provide it to Tom Wallace at the November 1 general meeting).
 
The 50/50 draw was won by Rick Davis, and Rick will be responsible for the draw at the November 1 general meeting.
