Jim Dryden announced that the memorial Service for Jim Strong, who passed away March 6, 2018, would be held at Saanich Peninsula Presbyterian Church this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Guest Speaker
Dave Hempsall introduced guest speaker Ric Davis, who is a member of the club. Ric spoke on the topic “Teacher Wars”.
Mr. Davis has had a long and distinguished career in the education industry, as a teacher, principal, President of the British Columbia Teachers Federation, and positions with the Ministry of Education, including Assistant Deputy Minister of Education.
Mr. Davis provided a most interesting talk regarding the history of the relationships of the BCTF and the successions of governments that have dealt with the BCTF and teachers over a period of many years. He then answered a number of questions from club members.
Al Colborne thanked the speaker and provided him with the Club’s customary speaker’s gift.
Reports
Bridge: Bob Day advised that the Bridge group wind-up lunch would be held at Odyssia Restaurant in Sidney at 12:15 today (May 3), and informed members that the owner of Odyssia is selling the restaurant, and that the restaurant will not be hosting the bridge wind-up lunch in future years, Rob also announced that he is resigning as organizer/administrator of the bridge group, and is seeking a successor.
Events: Noel Currie reported that the outing to Ocean Sciences Centre for Friday May 25 has room for 10 more attendees. See Alan Case to sign up for that tour.
Noel reported that the BBQ to be held at Heritage Acres will have one price for the salmon dinner and $10.00 more for steak. That event is to held August 14th. This will be a “bring your own drinks” event. Stan Hegstrom has volunteered to be in charge of entertainment for this event.
The Church & State Winery, site of last year’s Christmas luncheon, is under new ownership, and the club will be seeking another venue, as the new owners are asking $63.00 per person rather than last year’s $45.00 per person.
Golf: Andy Rosequist announced that the club’s monthly golf outing would next be at Olympic View Thursday May 17th and that Vic Swan would have a sign-up sheet available during the coffee break.
Pub Crawl/Hoppyness Hour Rod McLeod reported that the next meeting will be held on Wednesday May 9th. at 3:00 PM at the Prairie Inn in Saanichton.
Lunch at Mary’s - A show of hands indicated that eleven members would go to Mary’s for lunch after the meeting.
The meeting then broke for coffee, provided by Fresh Cup Roastery Cafe (Jim Townley), and presented by the ladies of the Presbyterian Church.

President: Jim Dryden noted that the management committee will be seeking nominees for the following positions on the committee: Vice-President; Treasurer; Events Chair; Speakers Chair Salomons. Membership: Andy Rosequist reported that current club membership is 100, and that 47 members and 3 guests were in attendance.
Treasurer: Peter Keith-Murray reported that the current bank balance is $1,002.76 before writing a cheque for today’s hall rental of $200.00.
Secretary: Rod Fimrite – Rod thanked Tom Wallace for providing notes for the management meeting minutes of April 17th, and asked that he do the same for the May and June management meetings as well, as Rod will not be in attendance for either of those meetings.
Speakers: No-Report, as Ralph Salomons was away, but Ralph will continue his excellent work with Clubrunner and will incorporate the Bulletin into Clubrunner.
Bulletin: Jack Askham – Jack has informed the management committee that he is stepping down as bulletin editor, and he was given a round of applause for his many years of excellent service in that role.
Past President: No Report, as Jack Parry was away.
50/50 Draw: Total raised was $82.00, with $41.10 won by Rod McLeod. (The source of the mysterious ten cents is unknown!) Rod will be responsible for 50-50 draw at the June meeting.
