Introduction of Guests:  There were no guests at today’s meeting.

Induction of new member: New member Peter Hollick was presented with a membership pin and Member Register by President Jim Dryden. Peter indicated that he had spent his working career in the paramedical field. Early in his career he worked in South Africa for four years in medical research for the South African government, and had then hitch-hiked through much of Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, arriving in London, England with literally three pence in his pocket. He telephoned relatives, who weren’t expecting him, and subsequently met and married his wife in Scotland, then came to Canada and worked for 25 years at Shaunessy Hospital in Vancouver. He has now been retired for 25 years. He and Mrs. Hollick have been married 50 years and have been members of the Tyrol Ski & Mountain Club for 50 years.

 

 

 Guest speaker Alyssa Jensen was introduced by Don Malins. The topic was “Single use Plastic Bags”

Alyssa Jensen, only 16 years of age, and about to enter grade eleven at Stelly’s Secondary School this fall, gave an exceptionally passionate plea for reduction of plastic bag pollution in both marine and land environments.

Alyssa explained that her grade 9 teacher had encouraged her to take a grade 11 environmental course in her grade 10 year, and that the course had fired her interest in the effects of plastic pollution in the oceans of the world on the sub-surface living organisms in those oceans. She has done a lot of research on programs aimed at reduction and elimination of single-use plastic bags, and has spoken to municipal council members and others, including young students in pursuit of her mission to “make a difference”.

Alyssa’s talk was very well received by club members, and she left us with a challenge to ask merchants if they have any alternative to plastic bags when we are shopping.

There was resounding applause for our guest speaker, Alyssa Jensen!

Alyssa was thanked by Don Lambourne and presented with a gift in appreciation of her excellent presentation.

 

 Golf: Andy Rosequist reminded members that the next outing for the golf group will be at Cedar Hill Golf Course on Thursday August 16^th. Vic Swan had the sign-up sheet at his table.

 

Bridge: Bob Day – Bob entertained members with a bridge joke, and then present the bridge group trophy to Jim Surgenor and himself. Bob indicated that he was stepping down from the position of Bridge Group   Co-ordinator, and was seeking a replacement for that remarkably non-demanding position.

 

Hoppy Club: Rod McLeod reported that the club would next meet at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday August 8^th at the Stonehouse Pub, 2215 Canoe Cove Road, North Saanich.

 

Life Membership:  President Jim Dryden then presented nonagenarian member Jack Askham with a bowl in recognition of his long and excellent service to the club in his role as bulletin editor. In accepting the gift and recognition, Jack modestly acknowledged that his friend, member Stan Hegstrom had assisted him with that work

 

Nonagenarian Status:  President Jim Dryden then asked member Don Stott to come forward to accept his certificate recognizing his attainment of nonagenarian status, and Don indicated that he hoped to have many more years of membership in the club.

Membership Chair: Andy Rosequist reported that there are 103 members in the club, 47 of whom were in attendance at today’s meeting.

 

Treasurer: Peter Keith-Murray reported that our current bank balance was $2,720.99 at the club’s July 31, 2018 financial year-end, and that the current bank balance stands at $3,299.31. Peter indicated that Vic Swan will take over the Treasurer position at the Annual General Meeting in September, and that he will provide service when Vic is on his extended winter vacations.

 

Secretary: Rod Fimrite read the Notice of Motion that Ralph Salomons had prepared for the two bylaw amendments what will be voted on at the Annual General Meeting. It is proposed that Bylaw #4(f) be amended to provide that the requirement of publication of a membership roster booklet will be replaced by the maintenance of a membership roster on the club’s Clubrunner website, and that Bylaw #4(i) be amended to the website manager will email the monthly bulletin to members instead of the current distribution by the Bulletin Editor (See: Notice of Motion below)

Speakers Chair: Ralph Salomons - No Report

 

Events: Noel Currie had left the meeting, but incoming Events Chair Mike Parfitt reported that 50 people have signed up for the club’s BBQ at Heritage Acres.

 

Past-President: Jack Parry reported that in his role of soliciting new executive members, while other club members could put their names forward for any of the required positions, current nominees are:

 

50-50 draw was won by Jim Dryden in the amount of $34.00, who donated the pot back to the club.  Jim will run the 50-50 at the September meeting.

 

President Jim Dryden announced that the next general meeting will be September 6^th, and that the next management committee meeting will be held at the home of Jim Dryden at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday August 21st. Jim thanked Norm Dyer for acting as greeter at today’s meeting, and Jack MacAulay for running the 50-50 draw.
